What drives the gold price?

💵

US Dollar strength

Gold is priced in USD globally. When the dollar weakens, gold rises in USD terms — and vice versa. A 1% dollar move often translates to a 0.8–1% inverse move in gold.

📈

Inflation expectations

Gold is a classic inflation hedge. When investors expect higher inflation, they buy gold to preserve purchasing power, pushing prices up. Low inflation typically suppresses gold demand.

🏦

Central bank buying

Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset. Large purchases by China, India, Russia, or Turkey can move markets significantly. Central banks bought record amounts in 2022–2024.

Geopolitical risk

Wars, sanctions, and political instability drive "safe haven" demand. Gold typically spikes during crises as investors move out of equities and currencies into physical stores of value.

📊

Interest rates

Higher interest rates make bonds and savings accounts more attractive relative to gold (which pays no yield). When real rates fall below zero, gold typically outperforms.

⛏️

Mining supply

Global gold mine production is relatively stable at ~3,500 tonnes/year. Major new discoveries are rare. Recycled gold (from jewellery and electronics) contributes another ~1,200 tonnes annually.

Why doesn't my jewellery sell for spot price?

There are two separate gold prices you need to understand: the spot price (raw commodity market) and the retail price (what you pay in a jewellery store).

📍 Spot price (melt value)

Pure gold content × market price. An 18K ring weighing 5g contains 3.75g of pure gold. That's your melt value — what a refiner would theoretically pay for the raw metal.

🏪 Retail price (buy price)

Melt value + making charges (5–20%) + retailer profit (20–50%) + VAT/tax. A ring worth $200 in gold may retail for $500–$800. Premium brands can reach 5–10× melt value.

💰 Resale price (sell price)

Gold buyers and pawnshops typically pay 70–90% of the current melt value for scrap gold jewellery. Specialist dealers, auction, or direct sale to other jewellers may yield closer to melt or even above it for rare pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current gold price per gram?
The gold spot price changes every second during market hours. Use the live table at the top of this page for the exact current price per gram in your currency.
What is a troy ounce of gold?
A troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals. It equals 31.1035 grams — slightly heavier than a standard (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams. All gold spot prices quoted internationally use troy ounces.
How is the gold price determined?
Gold prices are set by the LBMA twice daily (the "Gold Fix") and trade continuously on futures exchanges like COMEX. Prices reflect supply, demand, currency movements, inflation expectations, and investor sentiment.
What is the difference between spot price and retail price?
The spot price is the raw market price for pure gold (24K). Retail jewellery costs more because of making charges, retailer margin, and taxes. Finished jewellery typically costs 1.5–3× the melt value of its gold content.
How do I calculate the gold value of my jewellery?
Multiply the weight in grams by the karat purity fraction, then multiply by the current price per gram. For example: an 18K ring weighing 10g contains 7.5g of pure gold (10 × 0.75). At $90/g spot, that's $675 in gold content.
